Good metro/municourse

After playing this course twice, I think it's one of the more interesting Denver city courses. It was designed by Donald Ross and opened in ~1926, wow. Currently, the driving range (into a lake) is not open. Walking out to the practice green and #1 tee are a bit iffy if folks on #9 pull or hook into the trees. The greens play fairly quick, so spend time at the practice putting green to get it dialed.

This par 71 course is ~6500 yards max, but the ratings are 70.7/130 from bronze, 69.4/126/6232y from gold, 67/122/5756y/par 73 from black, and 66.6/119/4709y/par 73 from silver, so expect some non-distance challenges for a muni.

Leaves in the fall can add to your challenge. We walked (it's very walkable) into probably 10-15 lost ones with very light golfer traffic. When in doubt, stay below the hole here. The design seems to favor faders, but there are a few draw holes (6, 7, & 18). The course lies close to Hampden, which makes holes #14-17 slightly more intimidating if you're not on your game. Hole #17 is quite picturesque and with #18 makes for a tougher 1-2 finish. Oh yeah, the 150 stick on #17 is not 150.

The greens will favor those with those with experience on the course.

Right now, the weekday M-F walking rate is $28, $22 seniors, which makes it a reasonable round. With its tight layout, walking intentionally leisurely only took 3:30 even with hunting among leaves for some shots.

The 19th hole is pretty good if you're thirsty or hungry after your round.

Course is not what it used to be

The course has gone downhill in the past 10 years. The snooty woman in the pro shop was the icing on the cake. No need to come back again.

A pretty nice course. Very enjoyable.

I hadn't played Wellshire in 25 years. Its changed a bit, but so have I. I'll put it on my regular play list for weekday play. It was busy, but not overcrowded. The pace was well managed. The greens were in great shape. And the recent rain we have had did not leave the course too soggy.

Disappointing

On the Positive side, the staff was friendly, the sand traps had real sand and the greens were in good condition. On the other hand: the pace was extremely slow. It took 52 minutes to play the first three holes. The tee boxes and fairways were in bad shape. Huge areas of grassless hardpan, over watered mud holes and other GUR. Much worse condition than her sister Denver City course like Kennedy and City Park (when it was open)

good day

We went off on schedule and the course was in good shape except for a couple of sprinkler problems. Moved along quickly and for someone liking fast greens this was a dandy. I haven't played the course in a couple of years and it was in the best shape I have encountered.

Memorial Day At Wellshire

Donald Ross courses are always fun and challenging. Love the improvement they made on #10. Highly disappointed that they didn’t catch/rake up the huge clumps of grass around some of the greens. Had a good time overall though.

Poor Conditions

Course in poor shape - #10 unplayable. Ground under repair / its a goat path right now. No way it should be priced at current levels. I’ll not be returning. Consider yourself forewarned - Wellshire is another City of Denver golf fiasco.

Very poor conditions and pace of play

I have played Wellshire many many times over the years and have never seen it in such poor condition. It was all torn up and not very enjoyable. The pace of play was exceptionally long with no course marshals.

Under construction- New Spinklers

First hole had a temp green and the hole was about half the distance. Putting on the fairway. Poor conditions. The 10th hole had a temp Tee Box - again half the distance. Greens were rough- no sand in the sand traps. I could go on- but I won't. Great staff and we had fun playing in the 66 degree weather. Won't go back till fall.

Slow play on a February day!

Had a 1:00 time, but 3 ladies that were walking saw there were 2 of us in a cart and swapped times with us. Teed off at 12:50, had to wait on every hole for the groups ahead of us. Finished the round at 5:25. Seems like they overbooked the course and didn't have a Marshall keeping the pace of play quick! Slow play ruined a nice course.

Decent course

Played here because it was a Donald Ross course. Greens were in great shape. Fairways were good. A little noisy in some parts of the course due to traffic near by. Some greens were boarderline unfair because of where the pin positions were. Checking in was a little bit of a process and slow. Range is poor at best. Hit off mats into a pond with limited flight golf balls.

Its an amazing layout

Its an original Donald Ross Layout beautiful course. In my humble opinion its the most under rated course in Denver. The new superendent is great and has the course in great shape last summer it looked the best I've seen it in years.

Fun Muni

Wellshire is part of the Denver public courses and in my opinion is the best one with the best layout. This is a fun golf course that is worth $40 to walk, maintenance is decent for a muni. If it were maintained with higher standards I would play it all the time.

Good layout, poor condition

OK, so its a muni course. That being said, all of Denver's other muni courses are in much better shape. It doesn't look like they ever do maintenance on the cart paths and the for sure don't control where people go. I have played here a lot and pace of play is hit or miss. I have played 5 1/2 hour rounds, and normal rounds. It depends on what is in front of you. They don't do ANYTHING to control pace of play.

Best Denver Muni

Wellshire is my home course due to location and value, but is a nice course for a Denver public. The conditions are good(minus the 10th hole), but most courses are right now due to all the rain we've had this spring. Not sure what the other reviewer was talking about getting in a 3hr round, usually 4-4.5 and closer to 5 on weekends but that seems typical of the local courses.
